Geography Bowl

2009 Winner - Hillgrove High School
2008 Winner - Riverwood High School

*If you are interested in being added to the invitation list, email Dr. Harry Trendell at htrendel@kennesaw.edu.

The geographers of the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Kennesaw State University are pleased to invite your school to the 2010 High School Invitational World Geography Bowl to be held on the KSU campus on Friday, April 23, 2010. This competition is now in its eleventh year. We are sending you this invitation at this time so that you may have ample time to reply.

If your school is interested in sending a team of 9th Grade freshmen students, who are taking or will take Social Studies classes at your school in the 2009-2010 school year, please contact us promptly at the e-mail address, or phone number below. We would like to know as soon as possible in order to plan for this exciting and educational event. We will send the High School Invitational World Geography Bowl Rules for 2010 and more detailed information upon your notifying us of your intent to send a 9th grade World Geography Bowl team to the competition. Please respond by the November 20, 2009 if you plan to participate. We need your school name and the name of the contact person for your school including their e-mail address and daytime phone number.

A team consists of five 9th Grade students, one of whom will be the team captain, plus each team should have a teacher/chaperone to accompany them. (An individual school may choose to bring one or two alternates, but that is a local decision.) The teams will compete against 9th graders from the other schools in a round-robin preliminary round, which may be modified depending on the number of high schools competing. The top four teams, based on won-loss record in the preliminary rounds, advance to the consolation and championship rounds. Each round in the competition will have toss-up questions and team questions based on information covered in standard 9th grade world geography textbooks.

The competition is planned for a 8:30AM to 3:00PM time frame, with a break for lunch. Students from Geography classes at Kennesaw State will be on hand to help with logistics, and act as moderators, judges, spotters, timekeepers, etc. KSU geography faculty will act as moderators for the championship rounds. The competition will be open to the public and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. The competition will be held and trophies awarded regardless of how many schools participate. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Geographically Yours,
