The National Council for Geographic Education NCGE is a non-profit organization, chartered in 1915 to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning. NCGE supports geography teaching at all levels—from kindergarten through university. Our members include both U.S. and International teachers, professors, students, businesses, and others who support geographic education. The 2010 Annual Conference is going to be held in Savannah, GA. The 2009 Annual Conference was held in Puerto Rico. The following materials were presented by GGA Steering Committee members Dan Page and Kay Reeve. The Real West Side Story Migration of peoples across the face of the earth is as old as the nomadic humans moving to greener pastures in search of better food sources. Migration occurs as the result of a combination of push and pull factors initiating the desire for people to change place. The case of Puerto Rican migration to the United States is unique in that, from 1918 to present, it was considered an internal migration, not an immigration. The barriers of race, language, and cultural differences resulted in similar negative experiences for Puerto Rican migrants and those of immigrants to the United States from other countries. This warrants further investigation of the migration of the Puerto Rican population in the 20th century. |
