WHAT: A week-long residential interactive professional development workshop

WHO: Geography, social studies, & world history teachers, grades 5 – 12
WHY: For professional development credit (and fun!)



Description of the Institute
The all-new Jimmy Carter Library & Museum (JCL) and the Georgia Geographic Alliance at Kennesaw State University (GGA) are happy to be sponsoring this standards-based institute, which will focus on developing geographic literacy and the process of teaching with documents. Participants will leave the institute with GPS-correlated classroom-ready geography lessons, as well as new ideas for teaching geography & social studies using primary sources. The 5-day institute will include:

· Hands-on activities leading to the creation of classroom-ready lesson plans
· Presentations of best practices by k-12 educators
· Guest speakers from the academic world of geography
· Talks from Carter Center & Jimmy Carter Library & Museum staff
· Behind-the-scenes tours of the ALL-NEW Jimmy Carter Library & Museum
· Field trips to the Fernbank Museum and the Atlanta History Center
· A focus on integrating history, geography, and primary sources
· An archives researcher card (good for one-year and valid at all presidential libraries)
· Breakfast and lunch each day
· 3 PLUs professional development credit
· Lots and lots of fun


In addition to facsimiles of interesting primary sources from the holdings of the Library & Museum, participants will also receive free secondary source materials such as maps, books written by President Carter that shed light on historical events during the Carter years, and other subjects of relevance to the institute’s purposes.
Application Process

All geography, social studies, and world history teachers in the state of Georgia, GRADES 5 - 12, are invited to apply for this intensive institute. Applications must be submitted online by May 30, 2011. However, the institute is limited to 20 participants, and all participants may be selected prior to the deadline date. So don’t wait until the last minute.


Cost of Attendance
The cost of the institute is $100.00.

All checks will be made payable to: Jimmy Carter Library & Museum.

Please note that your $100 check will be returned to you on the morning of the last day of the institute, PROVIDED that you successfully complete the course.


Successful Completion of the Course

  • Attendance at all sessions, all day, each day
    (Mon. – Thurs., 8:30 am to 4:00 pm; Fri. 8:30 am to 12 Noon)
  • Read all assigned materials
  • Create a lesson plan based on the material and content researched
  • Present your lesson to fellow participants on the final day


Housing

Hotel accommodations will be provided for selected applicants who live outside of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
